"The Mountain is Out" by Joen Wolfrom

You know the old joke . . . you know you're from the Pacific Northwest when you understand the phrase "The mountain is out today!" In "The Mountain is Out" (1985), Joen has captured Puget Sound and Mount Rainier on a rare clear day. She uses varying hues in the water to create an illusion of depth, narrow strips of water fabrics against wide strips for the land, and quilting that emphasizes the mountains, sea, and sky. This quilt is shown in Landscapes & Illusions: Creating Scenic Imagery with Fabric. Photo by Ken Wagner.
