Sewing Organizations

American Sewing Guild—This national nonprofit organization provides home sewing enthusiasts with education, news, inspiration, and networking opportunities.

Home Sewing Association—This is an industry association of wholesalers, retailers, manufacturers, and educators that work together to inspire and teach consumers to sew. The HSA promotes September as National Sewing Month in the United States. The organization sponsors and/or supports the Each One, Teach One campaign, the Sew for a Cure campaign against breast cancer, the Sewing . . . It's Sew Soothing program, the Sew Creative! study that found cognitive benefits from sewing in children, and other programs. This group chartered the American Sewing Guild in 1978.

The Professional Association of Custom Clothiers—PACC is a nationwide, professional organization of custom clothiers in home-based and commercial settings. It educates its members about developments in the business, sewing, and textile industries, and promotes the use of custom sewing services by consumers.

Contest Sites

Quilting Organizations

Alliance for American Quilts—This group works to have quilts recognized both as works of art and as pieces of history, and to preserve the stories of quilts and quiltmakers. The Alliance has launched the Quilters' SOS (Save Our Stories) Project and, in cooperation with the Library of Congress's American Folklife Center, the Boxes Under the Bed™ project to preserve information about the history, patterns, practice, and people of quiltmaking. This site contains information about the Center for the Quilt, the Quilt Index, and how to become a Friend of the American Quilt.

American Quilt Study Group—This group encourages, presents, and preserves research on quiltmakers, quilts, and quiltmaking in the United States.

American Quilter's Society—AQS was founded in 1984 in Paducah, Kentucky, to showcase quilting as an art form. AQS certifies quilt appraisers, publishes fine quilting books, sponsors an internationally renowned annual quilt show and contest, and operates the Museum of the American Quilter's Society in Paducah. The Society has kicked off the twenty-first century by producing a "Teach America 2 Quilt . . . Again!" design for quilters to use in sharing their skills with others.

Appliqué Society—This US-based group has more than 2000 members in 11 countries. Check the site for a list of appliqué teachers and experts.

Canadian Quilters' Association/Association canadienne de la courtepointe—CQA/ACC sponsors the Quilt Canada conference every two years, which includes intensive workshops and national juried and unjuried quilt shows. The organization provides educational grants, awards of excellence for quiltmakers and teachers, and Best of Show/Viewers' Choice rosette ribbons for local guilds to award at their shows. CQA/ACC maintains a library of books, articles, patterns, videos, and slides for member use.

International Quilt Study Center—This organization was formed in 1997 when Robert and Ardis James donated more than 900 quilts to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The collection has since grown and is housed in the Department of Textiles, Clothing, and Design. It includes many fine Amish and Mennonite quilts from the late nineteenth century. The Center conducts quilt research, analysis, and preservation.

International Quilt Association—IQA works to preserve the art of quilting, to attain public recognition for quilting as an art form, and to advance the state of the art throughout the world. IQA publishes an annual teachers' directory, sponsors an annual quilt show and contest at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas, funds quilt-related research and artistic development, and sponsors the Patchwork & Quilt Expo, Europe's largest biennial international quilting conference.

Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation—This organization is looking for people or groups interested in making quilts from donated wedding gowns. They furnish the gown and the quilt is returned to the Foundation for them to raffle off to raise money for the foundation. This would be a great charity opportunity for quilt guilds.

NZQuilters Online—This is a group for quilters in New Zealand.

National Quilting Association—NQA was founded in 1970 in Washington, DC, to stimulate and document interest in quiltmaking, collecting, and preserving, and to establish and promote educational and philanthropic programs. This group certifies teachers and quilt judges, provides consumer advocacy, operates a Master Quilter program to recognize masterpiece quilts and their makers, and sponsors an annual, internationally renowned quilt show and contest.

Project Linus—This volunteer group provides security blankets to children experiencing serious illness and trauma. Based in the United States, Project Linus has 400 chapters in the US, Canada, Australia, England, Romania, the Philippines, and Mexico, and has delivered more than 250,000 security blankets to children around the world.

Quilters' Guild Inc.—This group is based in Sydney, Australia. It offers workshops, scholarships, teacher accreditation, quilt valuations, and a library for member use.

Quilters' Guild of the British Isles—This organization offers education and resources for members both inside and outside the British Isles, including lists of shops and museums within the UK and other countries. International representatives promote and maintain contact between the Guild and other quilters and guilds around the world. Services include putting members in touch with foreign penpals, providing assistance and information for overseas travel, providing information about exhibitions and competitions in other countries, and offering advice about sending quilts abroad for exhibition. Follow the "Diary" link for a list of quilt shows in Britain. This site also contains pages for the European Quilt Association.

The Lost Quilt Come Home Page—As the name implies, this site is dedicated to helping people find their lost and stolen quilts. It contains valuable information about labeling, documenting, appraising, insuring, storing, and safely shipping your quilts.

West Australian Quilter's Association—This group presents workshops, retreats, and Friendship Days, sponsors quilt shows, accredits teachers and judges, makes a resource library available for its members, and more.

Fabric Companies

Benartex—Benartex makes the ever-popular Fossil Fern, Berry Patch, Foundation by the Yard, Apple Butter and other fabric lines.

Chanteclaire—This is a relatively new company, founded in 1997. Some of its fabric lines are available at SewAndQuilt.com.

Hoffman California Fabrics—This site contains previews of Hoffman's new lines and a directory of US stores that carry Hoffman fabrics.

Marcus Brothers—This company's lines include Civil War Prints, Redwork and Blue, Vintage Country Charm, Country Charm Legacy, Pansies, and Bebe Moss's new Something Wonderful.

P&B Textiles—P&B's collections include Impressions, Turkish Treasures, Naturescapes, DAR Museum, and others.

RJR Fashion Fabrics—RJR's lines include Jinny Beyer, Thimbleberries, Pennwick, and Northern Brights. The site features a handy Fabric Search feature that lets you post messages about out-of-print fabrics you're seeking.

South Sea Imports—South Sea distributes the popular Debbie Mumm, kp kids, Kaye England, and Grandma's Attic collections, among others. The site highlights the collections and their designers.

VIP/Cranston—The Cranston Village site is jam-packed with quilt and fabric information and patterns. The Reference Desk in the Library contains useful items such as a glossary of fabric terms, how to read a fabric label, and more. The one thing you won't find on this site is actual VIP/Cranston fabric.

Sewing Machine Companies

Baby Lock—This site contains the latest information on Baby Lock sewing machines, sergers, and programs.

Bernina—The home page contains links to Bernina's sites in Australia, Denmark, Great Britain, Switzerland, the United States, and Europe. The World Quilt Competition is featured each year on Bernina's USA site.

Brother—To learn about Brother sewing machines, you'll have to go to the corporate site and use the search feature to look up "sewing machines."

Elna—The main site contains information about the Elna company and products. You can also visit the North American site.

Husqvarna/Viking/White—This is another international site. Click on the flag for information about Husqvarna Viking products and services in your own country.

New Home/Janome—The machines are called New Home in the United States and Janome in Canada. This site is for both.

Pfaff—The home page contains links to Pfaff's sites in a variety of countries. For pages in English, go to the US site.

Singer—This is the home of Singer sewing machines and other products, including the new Featherweight II, a 10-pound machine that comes with 16 stitch patterns and a four-step automatic buttonholer.

Magazines

Chitra Publications—They publish quality quilting magazines and books that recognize, promote and inspire self-expression.

The Quilter Magazine—This site contains information about the current issue and offers back issues of The Quilter Magazine for sale. You'll also find a directory of shops in the US, Canada, England, Norway, and South Africa. a project archive, and a large page of quilting links.

Threads—One of the best features of this site is the online index to Threads magazine. If you vaguely recall an article in a past issue and want to find it again, use this feature. The Threads site also contains excellent information about sewing techniques, fitting, garment design, and more.

#1 Quilting Accessories Emporium—This site offers affordable, heirloom-quality quilting frames, quilt racks and quilt hangers of exceptional beauty.

America's Quilting History—The history of American quilting covering
women and their quilting from Colonial America to the Great Depression
plus Native American, African American and Amish quilts.

American School of Needlework, Inc.—ASN publishes approximately 100 books each year in all areas of needlework and crafts, including quilting. This site shows some of ASN's creative instruction books and products.

Block Central—This site includes a quilter's "Coloring Book"—pages of traditional quilts you can print out and color. A great quilt-planning resource!

Bluebird Gardens—A family-owned company established in 1999 to merge a love for quilts, gardening and cats with a dash of antiques, furniture refinishing and favorite collectibles, particularly handmade items.

Katie Lane Quilts—They have a number of unique patterns and products that are easy to use. Thread-Wrap keeps spools of thread neat and clean. The Embroidery Seamstress—Quilting and Machine Embroidery patterns.

The Sewing Connection—Television personality Shirley Adams is no longer making episodes of The Sewing Connection for PBS, but you can still see her at sewing expos and on her own web site.

SewNet—SewNet offers online sewing classes, a partial directory of sewing stores throughout the US, and a cyber-trading list for sewers (called "sewists" on this site). This site contains links to a wide variety of independrnt pattern companies.

SewStorm Publishing—This company publishes books about sewing as a business. The site contains articles about the business of sewing and crafting.

Smithsonian Institution—The Smithsonian offers a Textiles and Quilts directory that includes links to antique-quilt exhibits, information on storing and caring for antique textiles, and more
