TRUMPETER'S GLORY QUILT

by Joen Wolfrom

Skill Rating: Advanced—You need to be able to draft pieces from a diagram, figure out block sizes, and piece blocks with set-in seams.

I love puttering in my gardens. I especially love to find excuses to walk through the gardens in springtime, because the flowering bulbs are such a welcoming sight after the bleak winter. Bulb catalogs present an amazing variety of daffodils, which I can rarely resist.

At the moment I'm intrigued with creating pieced flower patterns. This medallion quilt contains a daffodil variety that is modern in both coloring and shape. It's called "Trumpeter's Glory."

This quilt is a small medallion design. If you enlarge the pattern considerably, I'd suggest breaking up the background even further than I have.

The border is made with smaller versions of the same daffodil block as the center. A more interesting border design might include one, two, or all three of the flowers, made without stems and placed in their own small border blocks.

Tools & Supplies

  • Fabric for petals (variegated pink/purple in our example)

  • Fabric for stems (variegated pink/purple in our example)

  • Fabric for flower bases (green in our example)

  • Fabric for background (variegated peach/yellow in our example)

  • Large rotary ruler with 45-degree lines

  • Rotary cutter

  • Rotary mat

  • Thread

  • Sewing machine

  • Iron

  • Pressing surface

  • Thread snips

Instructions

All seams are stitched with 1/4-inch seam allowances.

  1. The Trumpeters' Glory center of this quilt is a rectangular block, rather than a square. This allows the design to flow better. So, though this is a type of patch design, it has been created using a grid of 25 squares across and 33 squares down. If you'd like to increase the background slightly, add squares both horizontally and vertically.

  2. To piece the large center block, I divided the background subjectively, attempting to create shapes that would be easy to piece. I've also broken up areas that could be combined into larger shapes. I like changing fabrics in the background, to provide interest and illusions. You can use my divisions, or divide the background however you like.

  3. Begin piecing with the central (top) daffodil and the background close around it, as shown. You'll need to use your rotary cutter and ruler to cut the pieces, using the 45-degree line on the ruler to make the angled cuts. Be sure you cut right-angle triangles for the background pieces.

  4. Next, cut and piece the daffodil on the left (bottom). Include the lower left background and the stems for both the left flower and the center flower, as shown.

  5. Sew the two flower sections together.

  6. Cut and piece the third flower, the one on the right side of the design, as shown.

  7. Add the base and stem to the right-hand flower.

  8. Sew the large flower sections together. Then add the top background to the block. Your daffodil medallion is complete.

  9. Make 14 smaller versions of the daffodil block. Sew them together to form borders for your quilt.
