CHRISTMAS GIFT POCKETS

by Sharlene Jorgenson
Courtesy of Quilting from the Heartland

Skill Rating: Beginner

Use one template, some pretty fabric and fiberfill, a few miniature ornaments, and a glue gun to create these charming pockets for quick gift-giving.

Tools & Supplies

  • Red and green fabric scraps

  • Rotary cutter

  • Cutting mat

  • Template K from Quilting from the Heartland's set Dresden Plate, Endless Chain, Tumbler, and Grandmother's Fan (QS4)

  • Iron

  • Pressing surface

  • Thread to match fabric

  • Sewing machine

  • Small scissors

  • Bamboo point creaser

  • Fiberfill

  • Miniature ornaments

  • Glue gun

  • Glue sticks for glue gun

  • Hand needle

Instructions

  1. For each gift pocket, use a rotary cutter and template K to cut two pieces of fabric.

  2. Fold each piece of fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together, and press. Without backstitching, use a 1/4-inch seam allowance to stitch the top edge of each piece together. Sew all your pieces in a long chain, to save time and thread. Remove the chain from your machine and clip the threads between the pieces.

  3. Trim the inner corner of each stitched piece, as shown.

  4. Turn each stitched piece right side out. Carefully push the points out with a bamboo point creaser or other blunt object. Align the seam with the lengthwise crease you pressed in earlier, and press the point flat.

  5. Place your two stitched pieces right sides together and use a 1/4-inch seam allowance to sew around all three raw edges, pivoting at the corners. Backstitch at both the beginning and the end of your seam. Trim the corners, as shown.

  6. Turn each pocket right side out, pushing the corners out with your bamboo point creaser. Turn the front piece down, as shown, and press. Poke a little fiberfill into each pocket.

  7. Glue miniature ornaments to the outside of each pocket. Glue other ornaments into place in the pocket top, or fill with small gifts. To make a hanging loop, twist together several lengths of thread and secure with a handle needle.
