JOEN WOLFROM'S DESIGNER SECRETS

The keys to blending blocks . . .

When you're selecting blocks to blend into a beautiful overall quilt design, use patterns that come from the same patch-pattern family. That is, all the blocks should come from the four-patch, the five-patch, the seven-patch, or the nine-patch family.

Look for block patterns with design lines that appear to move outward. This will create a visual connection between the blocks. Try not to use blocks that have isolated designs, because they won't interact well with other blocks.

For more detailed information about creating blended-block quilt designs, please consult Patchwork Persuasion: Fascinating Quilts from Traditional Designs. For a large selection of blended-block illustrations, see Make Any Block Any Size.
